Climbing in Bolivia, (14 Days)
Day 1. Arrive in La Paz (11,808ft /3.600m)
Arrive in La Paz, I does not matter if you come in the morning or in the night, we need to take it easy on the first hours because it is very high.
Day 2. La Paz - El Valle de la Luna (11,480ft/3.500m) – La Paz
We will leave the hotel around 09h00 after breakfast, and we will drive for around 1 hour to visit "El Valle de la Luna" (Moon`s Valley), which are very interesting and big sand formations, they look like a very big stalagmites, with its nice light red colors, we will make some pictures of this place and of course we will have some short walk, the round excursion will take us around 3 hours, and we will have a city tour in the afternoon visiting places like Plaza Murillo which is where the congress is located, and a nice Cathedral, as well as we will visit the San Francisco Church, and transfer to hotel. Day 3. La Paz – Copacabana Town (12,628ft/3.850m)
After breakfast, we will leave the hotel around 09h00 in the morning, we will drive for about 2 hour to get the Tiahuanaku ruins, once there we will visit the ceremonial civic town center, where we can observe one of the most important vestiges of the Aymara Culture, which have been Pre-Inca (800 years before Christ). Then after, we will continue our trip for another 4 hour to Copacabana town on the Shore of Titikaka Lake, we will have a lunch and the rest of the afternoon we will walk around. (B)
Day 4. Copacabana - La Paz
We will get our breakfast around 08h00 in the morning, and around 09h00 go to the excursion of the Island of the Moon, we will be part of the trip sailing and part of it doing some short hikes, we will get great views of the Cordillera Real, ( the main Bolivian mountain range), we will experience how the local people are living in the islands that would take us the half day, and we will drive back in the afternoon to the hotel in La Paz. Day 5. La Paz – Chacaltaya(17,384 ft/5.300m)
After breakfast we leave the hotel around 10h00, we will drive for an hour to get the parking lot at around 17,000 ft. and we will make a short hike for around 2 hours to get the summit of the Chacaltaya, which is at 17,384 ft/5.300m., we will get a very beautiful Panoramic view of many surrounding peaks, the round trip will take us 5 hours. We will have a relaxing time the rest of the afternoon, in the hotel. (B) Notice: These first 5 days are basically not very demanding, we will be most of the time driving, but it is necessary for the proper acclimatization
Day 6. La Paz - Condoriri Base Camp (15,088ft/4.600m)
We will have an early breakfast around 06h30 in the morning, and will departure around 07h30, we will drive for around 4 hours to our starting point for the hike, which will be Tuni Village at 14,432 ft/4.400m., we will give our packs, and camping stuff to the arriros (porters, lama drivers) to be loaded on a Lama or on a donkey, and we will star our 4 hour hike to the Condoriri Base Camp at 15,088ft/4.600., we will set up our tents and camping facilities and accommodate our stuff inside our tents, and we will have a relaxing time the rest of the afternoon until dinner time. Day 7. Base Camp - Pico Austria (17,286ft/5.270m)
We will have breakfast at 05h00 in the morning and around 06h00 leave the camp 15,088 ft/4.600., we will walk around 5 hours to get to the summit at 17,286ft/5.270m., and 2 hours to go down, the first section is mainly walking on stones and grass, only the last hour will be scrambling and probably we will need the rope, it has snow sometimes but very few, crampons will be not needed. We will get the camp in the afternoon. (B/BL/D)
Day 8. Base Camp - Tarija (17,384ft/5.300m)
We will wake up around 03h00 in the morning have breakfast and leave the camp at around 04h00, we will walk up for around 2 hours to get to entrance to the glacier, we will put on the crampons and rope up to continue up to the summit of Tarija at 17,384ft/5.300m., which it will still take us around 3 hours more. We will get very impressive views of Pequeño Alpamayo, Maria Lloco, Condoriri and between others. We will go down to the Camp in 2-3 hours. (B/BL/D)
Day 9. Condoriri Base Camp - La Paz
After breakfast, we will leave the camp around 10h00 in the morning, it will take us 3 hours to get to the Tuni Village, where our transportation will be waiting to pick us up to the hotel in La Paz, which take us 4 hours more. (B/BL)
Day 10. Free day in La Paz.
On this day we will take it very easy and relaxing day (B)
Day 11. La Paz - Huayna Potosi Hut (16,728ft/5.100m)
After breakfast, we will leave the Hotel around 08h00 in the morning, it takes us around 2 hours driving to get to our starting hiking point at 15,416ft/4.700m., then we will continue our hike to the Refuge (16,728ft/5.100m), that will take us around 3 hours, cause we will be walking on a moraine, and on some sand, we will get a porter who will help us with part of our heavy stuff (Crampons, ice axe, sleeping back). Once in the refuge we will be accommodated, have dinner and rest until midnight. (B/BL/D)
Day 12. Huayna Potosi Summit (19,968ft/6.088m)
We will get up around midnight, will get some light breakfast, and around 01h00 in the morning start walking up towards the summit of Huayna Potosi at 19,968ft/6088m., it will take us 7-8 hours to get there, and 3-4 hours to go back to the hut, We normally put the crampons and rope up in 5 minutes later from the refuge, it has some sections which are not so steep, other are kind of a flat, it has crevasses , and the last section is steep 45º. Once in the refuge we will pack our stuff and start going down to the place where our transportation will pick us to La Paz (B/BL)
Day 13. Reserve day for Huayna Potosi or Free day in La Paz.
We will use this day in case of bad weather or any other reason, or we can spend the last day in La Paz. (B)
Day 14. Flight back home.
Transfer from the hotel to the Airport. (B)
